Greetings,

After lurking for a while, the Wife and I went to our local Apple Store
last Friday.

An hour later we went home with a new MacBook Pro w/Airport Extreme:)

We are totally pleased with our switch from w#$%$$# so far, and expect
to be even more so as we learn more about it.

So "thankyou!" to this forum, as the info here was very helpful to us.

Regards,

Welcome to the cult

I switched two years ago, but beware!

After switching, slowly and mysteriously every consumer electronics device in my house and at work has a fruit on it. Router = airport extreme. Mp3 player = iPod Touch. Laptops = 13' Alum Macbook and 15 MPB. Desktops = 21.5 and 24' iMac. Knockaround machine = Power Mac G4. Wayback machine = PowerMac G3. And now I am lusting after an iPad.

And also curiously I have much, much less stress induced by said consumer electronics. My Macs just work. My iPod just works. The Airport just works.

Welcome.

Congratulations. I've found that my personal computing stress level has decreased 80% since getting my own Macbook Pro a few months ago. Everything just works. Apple continually fixes little issues with weekly updates that are totally painless and safe.

The only problem is that I find myself wanting more Apple gadgets. I'm thinking about Apple TV now, and I have one of the new iPod Touches on order. My wife and I have six iPods together.

The Airport Extreme was a good purchase as well. It does run a bit warmer than I'd like, but there have been no performance issues with it, unlike with previous Netgear and Sysco routers I've had. We have a cheap portable external hard drive plugged into it for back-up purposes. That reminds me, I still haven't set up Time Machine yet.

We also just bought a Lexmark WiFi printer/scanner/fax that was very liberating. We no longer need a dedicated computer desk. Our Macbooks float around the house randomly, the printer sits on a desk. Perfect.

I bet you will be shopping for a second Macbook soon. It is too hard to share these things for people that like to surf.

Steve Jobs would have us believe that iPads are perfect for surfing. That may be true if one doesn't type a lot. If one types a lot and likes a fully-fledged computer, the Macbook Pro is the way to go.

Too many...
Congrats on the switch! I hope your MBP is an actual MBP...ie the 15" or the 17". I still don't like how the call the 13" a MBP!

Anyways, have fun with it. And as thanxal mentioned, soon, lots of electronics with have a fruit logo on it:)

Nice!! I'd be interested in reading your impression of that printer.

I stopped at OfficeMax on my grocery run and picked up an Epson NX420
for $84 tax included, with 14-day return period.

We chose it because Apple has it in their store, and reviews were mostly
good. And it fit the budget.

Set-up was a breeze, maybe a little tedious, with good instructions.

We have printed 4 pages so far, they look good to us, equal to or better
than our previous Dell 296 usb.

It is a bit noisy, though it is on a flimsey card table in our basement just for now.

Overall we like it for occasional home use.
