My Intel iMac turned itself off. This has happened twice in the past month. I realize there can be a number of reasons why a computer shuts itself down. I am thinking heat. I downloaded a free program called Temperature Monitor For Mac.

Do the temperatures below look within the normal range?

Thanks.

I believe it has to be over 100℃.

Those temps are within normal range. Your iMac as you stated could have shut down for a number of reasons: Bad memory, PS fluctuation, among others.

Are you using an UPS? Could also be caused by a local power glitch. Here in my part of Texas we get very violent thunderstorms which lead to all sorts of AC power fluctuations and glitches. Not good for any type of electronic device.

My UPS is about two years old. I am going through the process of elimination. If need be, I will get another UPS. The power is pretty stable in my area of Southern California (County/city).

Is there any software that will let me know if all the fans are working?

I use iStat Menus. $16.00 to register. Well worth the cost.

I have installed iStat Menus. Is there any way I can hide the temperature readings that appear in the gray bar, in the upper right hand corner of the screen? If not, I can live with it.

My Intel IMac it turned itself off on Wednesday and once on Thursday. The temperatures below are in the normal range? My AppleCare warranty comes to an end in about one month. All the fans seemed to be working. I am about ready to buy a new UPS.

I don't have an iMac so our readings and temps are going to be a bit different, however, from looking at your stats, everything looks normal as far as I can determine.

Shutting itself off is a bit worrisome though. I doubt that it's being caused by overheating unless the logic board sensors aren't working right. The only other causes of shutting down randomly that I can think of is if the power supply is acting up or a memory module is intermittent.

Since your Apple care is about to expire... if you live near an Apple store, it might be a good idea to take it in and get it on record that something is wrong. That way if the machine needs repair after the warranty expires, they'll have your visit on file, and if the repair is related, they'll do it for free.

I do have a foreboding thought that it may "give up the ghost" when Apple Care expires. Taking it in to the Apple Store is a good suggestion. Is there any software that will allow me to test the memory? I was also thinking logic board.

I do have a case number with Apple Care.

CPU: 42C (107.6F)
Ambient: 24C (75.2F)

GPU Heatsink: 51C (123.8F)
Mem Controller: 43C (109.4F)
Optical Drive: 38C (100.4F)

It like our temperature readings are not too far apart. Temperatures below are from this morning when the computer was not in use for about eight hours. Right now, I am not brave enough to adjust my fan speeds (smcFanControl). I don't want to void my warranty. I do have the website bookmarked.

+1 for memory test here. I used it to test my G5 when I was experiencing some problems. It found some memory-related issues that the Apple tests missed. It could have been due to this being an intermittent problem but this found it right away.
