I got my macbook Pro about a year ago, and for the past 5 months or so the computer has been gettin hotter and hotter. When i just run normal applications like safari my computer runs about 180F an 4000 RPM on both of my fans.

I have a
MacBookPro5,3
And im running the Higher powered graphics card at the moment.

Any ideas about how to fix this?

And im also getting a weird hard drive startup noise when i turn on my computer. Is this normal?

I would definitely take it to an Apple store thats hot unless you are viewing flash content
for hours and the noise if its new should raise some concern.

what do u use to monitor temps and fans? my 13" MBP is getting warmer and warmer as well. I noticed there are some burn marks on the bottom of the nvidia chip when I was upgrading the hard drive. Fortunately I do have some warranty left.

Download iStat Pro in widgets and see if both fans are running and take note of the different temps for all the sensors and fan speeds also look at the activity monitor and
see if something is running excessively.

Is this normal? My CPU is 190F and fan was 1900rpm, went up to 2300rpm and CPU dropped to 175. My PC runs about 110/130F max, I know laptop may be a little hotter, but holy cow! What are others seeing? I have a 2009 13" Macbook Pro.

Maybe it is normal.

170ºF is only 76ºC. The CPU is rated up to 105ºC (221ºF). If you've got the fans speeding up at that temperature then it is running perfectly normally. You've got a lot more room there before anything ever becomes damaged. And, rest assured, if the temperatures ever climbed to a point where damage is possible (I've never heard of that and I've been on these MBP forums for 2 years) then the machine will automatically shut itself off. There is no way that you could do damage to it with heat.

No. Your machine in my opinion is running hot. You didn't mention where your machine was when it's running that warm. Is it on a flat surface where air can flow under and around it? Have you tried a notebook stand?

If those temperatures continue and you're not doing anything out of the normal you might want to take it on in to Apple and have them give you an estimate of repair cost if there's anything wrong. (since you don't have Apple care)

Right, The most hot part is the top left part right were the power cable plugs in, the rest of the computer seems cool in comparison.

Also the bar above the keyboard thats right under the monitor.

Battery area is luke warm, left speaker is hot. Under left part of computer is hot as well.

mine is raised on a stand with complete airflow under and around, the stand does not have fans tho. CPU is running at 139F right now with fan at 1988rpm. heat is concentrated all along the top near the power connector and to the right of that. Where the CPU and vpu are. I've got word open, web browser, and some remote desktop windows. no video or games.

That would throw up a warning flag and definitely take it in and have it looked
at the warmest part will usually be the CPU and the GPU.

Go to iFixit: The free repair manual site for an in depth look at the inside of your MBP. Just match the model and year and look for a procedure that shows the inside of the machine - (swapping out the logic board would be a good example)
