i would prefer to run it off my macbook pro. it's telling me that i need 10.5.8, i guessing this means that i have to splash out and upgrade. will everything still run ok if i do, how long can i expect my laptop to run before it becomes outdated!! (or is there a way around upgrading, cash is a little scarce at the min)

You didn't tell us one VERY VERY important piece of information...what version of the Mac OS are you currently running?

oh yeah, sorry.

10.4.11

oops!

Thanks for the info.

Yeah...if you want (or need) to upgrade to OS 10.5.8 "Leopard" you will have to purchase an OS install disk ($100+). Or since you have an Intel based Macbook Pro...you could also upgrade to OS 10.6.4 "Snow Leopard". But again, you would need to purchase an install disk.

Hope this helps,

- Nick

any truth in this:

AppleInsider | Apple's Snow Leopard disc will install on Tiger Macs

"For owners of Intel-based Macs who are still using the older Tiger version of the Mac OS, Apple is officially making Snow Leopard available only in a "boxed set" that includes other software and costs $169," Mossberg said. "The reasoning is that these folks never paid the $129 back in 2007 to upgrade to Leopard. But here’s a tip: Apple concedes that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade will work properly on these Tiger-equipped Macs, so you can save the extra $140."

Yes Snow Leopard would run fine on your Macbook Pro.

Regarding the link...here's the way Apple says it's supposed to work:

1. For folks upgrading from OS 10.4 "Tiger" to OS 10.6 Snow Leopard you're supposed to purchase the "Mac Box Set".
2. For folks upgrading from OS 10.5 "Leopard"...the $29 OS 10.6 Snow Leopard disk is the upgrade path.

If the article in the link says that the $29 Snow Leopard disk works for folks running OS 10.4 "Tiger"...then you decide which path to take.

Well, that might not be the issue. How old is it? Maybe the hardware will give out before the software is outdated.

At work we've upgraded all our intel macs to 10.6. The install is about 1/2 the size of a 10.5 install & runs fine on everything from the first intel minis, macbooks & iMacs to the latest and greatest.
