• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

This question probably gets asked all the time, but I still have no solution.
I'm not really looking for a mp4->avi converter specifically but rather a converter with a large range of available conversions.
And because I'm a poor college student.. I would prefer it to be free :Smirk:
Thanks!

Handbrake no longer will create AVI's tho so if the OP does really want to go from mo4->avi it won't work :( .

Quoting from Handbrakes main page:

AVI: AVI is a rough beast. It is obsolete. It does not support modern container features like chapters, muxed-in subtitles, variable framerate video, or out of order frame display. Furthermore, HandBrake's AVI muxer is vanilla AVI 1.0 that doesn't even support large files. The code has not been actively maintained since 2005. Keeping it in the library while implementing new features means a very convoluted data pipeline, full of conditionals that make the code more difficult to read and maintain, and make output harder to predict. As such, it is now gone. It is not coming back, and good riddance.

ffmpegx as was suggested by Kevriano, MPegStreamClip which can be obtained here: Squared 5 - MPEG Streamclip video converter for Mac and Windows or you can try videomonkey ( Video Monkey ), or you can try EVom (which is more geared for pulling video off the net and converting, but will transcode) Evom - Convert and Download Videos to iTunes
