Try uninstalling and do a reinstall. Make sure you use the uninstaller provided with Office 2008. Is Word the only application you're installing from the Office suite or have you tried to install Excel, Powerpoint, and so on?

Has Word worked previously on Snow Leopard as if it is a new install you need to have Rosetta installed to enable the application to be run?
