using gcc

so im a super noob when it comes to writing code..so i went to start out and use gcc for compiling...except that terminal doesnt know the command... i checked /usr/bin/ and its not their...i downloaded gcc 4.5.1 offline and run the install file...buuutt nothin happens...what should i do...all i want to do is learn some simple C stuff...and im stuck already..any help appreciated...

Install the Xcode development tools - it will include everything you should need to get started including gcc. They are on your install discs or you can get them from the Apple dev site here.
