Hi all,
I have a so-called USB Targus Chillmat, which I use to keep my Macbook Pro reasonably cool. You can use it when you are sitting on a couch with your laptop on your lap, but I use it all the time. CPU heat drops from 80 to 54 degrees, so.

Anyway, when I turn it on or off, my External Harddrive is removed, and I get a pop-up.

I have a Lacie Harddisk (Design by Neil Poulton) 1TB.

I couldn't find a satisfactory answer in any related post.

This is what the console produces:

You haven't asked a question in your post either, so not really sure what answer you're looking for.

Any hard drive needs to be ejected prior to just cutting the power to it, which is essentially what you're doing by using the power button on the Targus while the drive is plugged into it. Without properly ejecting the drive, you're risking data loss.

Targus Chillmat is not the External Hard disk

The problem is as follows: when I hook up my Macbook I connect it to a USB hub. This hub contains the USB links to the printer, my Ext Hard drive (LACIE), and my Targus Chillmat to keep the computer relatively cool.

When I leave my workplace, I want to power of the Chillmat, because I turn the Macbook to sleep (because if I do it when the MB is sleeping, it will wake up). Hence, I turn of my Targus Chillmat by pushing the On/Off button and then my External HD is automatically disconnected as well. And I don't want that. I want my Ext. HD to keep connected. The turning on/off of the Targus Chillmat should not lead to the removal of any other device I suppose, but it does.

So why does this happen, and how do I solve this problem?

Thanks, Thieme

Simply put, your USB hub is confusing the system into thinking that when the mat is powered down, the USB connection the hub is employing is no longer in use, hence, it turns it off and that turns off your hard drive. Doesn't matter for the printer since it's self powered.

Solution: Don't use the hub or buy a chill mat or stand that is self powered.

Or, just to simplify matters until you're able to figure stuff out (so that you don't lose data on that drive)..drag the drive to the Trash (which turns into an eject icon). That way when you turn off- anything- the drive is not going to lose data.

Another option is to try using a different USB port on your Mac for one or the other, the drive or the chillmat.

Probably none of these are the answer you were looking for. Sometimes what we want to do, just doesn't quite work with the hardware we have.

thanks

thanks for your replies.

One thing, to clarify; turning off the chillmat DOES NOT turn off my Ext. HD, it just disconnects it.

Using the other USB entry in many cases is not possible either, because I use that for my iPHone (that does not work with my hub). Anyway, I think I will just assign a keyboard shortcut with Quicksilver that ejects my Ext. HD.

Thanks for your ideas and comments.
