So i have a late 07 all silver mack book pro.. i upgraded to 4gb of crucial ram cause i use photoshop , dream weaver, light room and the rest of the adobe products.. it runs good, but ive been reading/hearing i can run 6gb max .. would i see a benefit from 4gb to 6gb @ the price of 120$ more for 2 gb? Is any one maxed out on 6gb currently?

Thanks

Yes...if we're talking about the correct model MacBookPro...it can be upgraded to 6gig of ram.

As far as would you see any benefit from upgrading from 4 to 6gig of ram...it's somewhat hard to say. More ram either allows a single program to have access to more ram (if it needs it)...or allows you to open more programs simultaneously. Otherwise...6 gig of ram really won't make your computer any faster.

Hope this helps,

- Nick

Hopefully there will be a firmware upgrade to allow for 8GB on the older MBP's... but I won't hold my breath. :p

A while back, I read somewhere that stated it doesn't make sense to have to 2 memory slots and have 6GB of RAM max since there are no 3GB RAM sticks. It read on to say that for RAM to be best and equally utilized, it should be paired with the same # of GB's (and same brand) in the dual slots... not 2Gb in 1 slot and 4GB in the other.
Did I understand this to be wrong?

Maybe a little bit.;)

Officially...Apple says that this model Macbook Pro is upgradeable to 4 gig of ram. Yes 3rd party folks have successfully upgraded this model to 6 gig of ram...and any folks that have this model Macbook Pro should be thrilled to death that they CAN actually upgrade to 6gig of ram.

Whether this 6 gig ram upgrade is achieved via a 4gig stick & a 2gig stick of ram (or two 3 gig ram sticks...which of course don't exist)...matters not.

The bottom line is...Apple says that the max ram for this model Macbook Pro is 4 gig (2 x 2gig ram sticks). Any ram upgrades above 4 gig is really a bonus...but not officially supported by Apple.

good thread, but one more question

win cpu builder here....
I want to top end a 2007 mbp (2.33ghz core duo, 3gb ddr2 667mhz, 150gb hd, 256mb ddr3 ati radeon) with an upgrade to snow leapard (10.6). I expected to upgrade ram and was wondering if the 6gb ram ceiling went to 8gb with the os upgrade? Also, if you were TOP Ending the same mbp, what would you suggest?

Ram limit has not changed.. Only things you can upgrade on a MBP are the ram & hard drive.

By the way...the 2.33ghz MBP you're talking about is different than what is being discussed in this thread...since the MBP 2.33ghz has a 4gig max ram limit.

Also...you don't have a MBP 2.33ghz "core duo"...it's a "core 2 duo".

HTH,

- Nick

p.s. And just to confuse things further. You can upgrade your MBP to 4 gig of ram...but only about 3gig is useable/recognizable. So if it already has 3 gig of ram in it...I don't think any further ram upgrading will improve anything.

The only thing that putting 4GB into the '06-'07 MBP will do is maintain it's dual channel mode. Still only 3GB will be accessible. I have 4GB in mine, but I'm an old timer hardware enthusiast and I always tend to max things out. As to whether you would notice any improvement putting a matched pair in it - ??? - I'd have to guess highly unlikely you'd notice anything except in some benchmark test.
