Here's a squirrelly question that I've gotten many different answers to:
Do sites built w/ iWeb attract as many "hits" as sites built in the standard html/css way? (Don't really know what these are, just know that I don't know how to use them!).
Godaddy tells me that hosting w/ Mobileme is no good from a search engine optimization standpoint, and that I need to buy their SEO tools to attract hits.
The mac genius says that as long as I have my own domain for the site then mobileme will attract just as well as GoDaddy.
here's the website in question:
www.adocelticmusic.com

Well of course they say that. At least they're blatant about it. :)

The truth of the matter is that people searching for "adocelticmusic" see your page as the third entry. Of course, if they know adocelticmusic, then they just add .com and they're there.

But this proves that you don't NEED seo tools all the time. If your content is memorable and specialised, people will seek you out.

If you're trying to drive serious amounts of traffic, I'd suggest doing a Google ad campaign tied into searches for celtic music.

If you're trying to do this for free, then yes SEO software can help -- but I wouldn't use GoDaddy's tools, I'd just do a search on MacUpdate.com for "SEO" and see what's top-ranked.

Thanks for the advice Chas, I'll probably do Google Adwords.
Still curious though if there was a pat answer out there whether or not an "optimized" iWeb site hosted by mobileme will show up in search results (w/out Adwords) as well as a site hosted by a "standard" hosting service.
i guess there's always a side-by-side comparison...

I can only pass on my experience in this regard. I have a podcast called Chas' Crusty Old Wave (an 80s music show).

I don't use any SEO type tools at all, and yet if I search "Crusty Old Wave" my iWeb site is the top hit. This is due to its unique name rather than any keyword trickery.

This discussion on another forum (also with a similar reply by me!) is probably worth reading.

Google Adwords can get pricey based on industry. The cost per click can really get up there depending on how many other people are offering the same product or showcasing that content.

I think you will be ok though as your content is a little more "specialized" ;)

An iWeb website SHOULD be hosted on a real web host and not MobileMe for the following reasons;

1) MobileMe is for personal hosting
2) You need to use CNAME forwarding WITHOUT domain masking* if you are using MobileMe and have a domain name. If you don't do this, don't expect any good results. If you do already do this, it's still not as good as having a real web host.

*domain masking means as you go from page to page on your site the address bar at the top of your browser doesn't change (it will always be yourdomain.com). You don't want this.

3) You can use any web host but don't buy the SEO Tools. They won't report correctly for iWeb sites because of the meta refresh.

What you really want to do is make sure you use this short URL method with a REAL web host;
