I thought this a cool story. All the times, from my experience, that made me think of how some other company would have never done that, totally makes sense now.
I still think there should be a fine line when they need to say,"Sorry, no free repairs!"

Great story. I've had some great experiences at the genius bar too. After having paid for the out of warranty replacement for my wife's phone the genius notices how scratched my screen was and replaced it for free. It's people and service like this that keeps me buying from them.

I do like the Genius bar. They have always been nice, and do not treat you like you don't know anything. And if you seem to be unsure they do explain it very well. As well they do seem to have more liberties than a normal best buy etc.

I would say a Genius bar knows far more about an Apple product than my schools IT department- and my school has a lot of Mac users versus the amount of Windows computers owned by the school. It's a bit disconcerting. :|

My buddy bricked his out of warranty jailbroken 3GS, The genius so was cool about and told him no to worry about it, 20 minutes later he walked out with a replacement.
For the most part as long as your not rude, They will hook you up.

Cool story, however, in my experiences, I've found that just being plain honest about your situation and being polite/professional about it, the Genius' are pretty awesome..

I've had my iPhone replaced 4 times within 8 months at the 'Bar without any problems. I even admitted I JB the first one, and he didn't even say anything about voiding the warranty..

Just walked in for my appointment, told the guy what was up, and he did a few diagnostics and within 15 minutes I was out of the store with a brand new replacement.

On the flip-side, I've done similar things for customers while working as a PC tech at my buddy's old computer store.

Kindness will get a long way. If you think about it imagine how many rude people those Apple employees deal with everyday?

Oh trust me, I know allllllllll about rude people.. Having worked in call centers for the past 4 years, I've heard the worst of the worst.. And had to deal with them..

I consider myself a customer service specialist, having the experience to back it up. And honestly, IMO, you can't pay any one enough per-hour to work (or deal) wit the general public.

Basically, I treat customers how I would want to be treated if I had to call/visit for customer service/support.

Nice way to thank the Genius by posting it on the Internet for everyone to read.

Now Steve Jobs is going to personally review every iPhone screen repair at the Indianapolis store on that date and fire the Genius...:|
