External hard drive format converter?

So I have a Seagate portable hard drive but when I got it I wasn't using any Apple computers so it's formated in ntfs. I'd like to not have backup all the data elsewhere and reformat it so I'd like to know if there's a converter out there that can help me. Thanks!

There are no converters. You have to backup first before formatting otherwise all data will be lost.

What format do you wish to use? If you want your hard drive to be compatible for both a Mac and PC, FAT-32 could be used although it has limitations on file sizes of ~4 GB. If you want your hard drive to be used only for your Mac, then HFS+ Extended Journaled should be used.

Ok so if I backup my portable hard drive to another computer and empty it out could I use Disk Utility to format it for Mac?

Yes. Just select the erase option and then choose Mac Extended Journaled with GUID partitioning scheme.
