If you right click on a folder and then select 'Get Info'. Under the general tab it will tell you how many files are within the folder.

Right click on the background of the finder window you want the info on (make sure you don't right click an icon) and choose get info from the menu. At the top of the get info window, it will show the total size of the folder and how many items it contains. It may take a few seconds for it to display the totals as it does it's calculations.

simul-posts!

Both answers above are correct, depending on whether you want to see the number of items in an open folder, or without opening it.

Also, Finder Windows will display the number of items in open folders if the appropriate "bar" is active. I believe they are slected from the View Menu. -not at my Mac now

Actually to finish ToMACsh's Post, You actually don't have to have a bar active, it does it by native... all the way at the bottom of a finder window, it should say something along the lines of "88 items, 118 GB available"

Also if thats not the case, then if you can point out what to toggle on and off, that would be helpful, cause I have tried for a long time to make it go away, but it wont. (dont want it gone away now, since I like it, but cant hurt to know :))

**Sorry toMACsh if thats not where you where going or if thats not what you where trying to say :)

No apology necessary. I wasn't at my Mac, and I'm a little short on RAM. ;)

If you go to View and select Hide Toolbar, the item count "bar" at the bottom will disappear. (OS 10.5.8) But, the toolbar at the top goes away also.

That works in Snow Leopard too, or you can just click this little white/grey thing on the top right.
