the 8GB is on 2 4GB dimms and my existing memory is 4GB (on 2 2GB dimms).

can I combine the two for 12GB or just leave it with the new 8GB?

As far as I know...all 27" iMacs with the "i" series processor have 4 ram slots (in fact all 27" iMacs have 4 ram slots). So you should be able to keep the 2 x 2gig sticks of ram that are currently in it...and then fill the remaining two empty slots with 2 x 4gig sticks of ram...for a total of 12 gig of ram.

If you want to go really crazy the 27" iMac will support upto 16Gb of RAM...

does 16Gb make anyone else drool? even though as far as my IT knowledge is concerned, seems very unnecessary, haha.

Oh? Sweet! I'll plug em back in tomorrow and behold the awesomeness!

Yeah, 16GB sounds awesome. I like to have tons of photos open in Capture NX2 and it will also help when merging TIFFs for HDR work.

Thanks again for all the help/advice. This forum is phenomenal!
