I'm often getting the below message in my macbookpro with snow leopard, but I don't have any application called "master". Please could anyone explain me why I'm getting this or anything wrong with my macbook.

Pardon my ignorance, is it safe to turn off the software firewall?

According to Apple, it is if you are using a router or modem that has a Firewall installed.
But you should enable it if you are using a public internet connection (Coffee shop, library…).
I have no doubt that Chas_m can elaborate
