I recently picked up a used Extreme Base Station (a1143). This is the model that supports gigabit ethernet connections. I have my mini connected via ethernet and when I run network utility and check the link speed, it only shows as 100 mbits/s. Is there something I need to setup in Airport utility or in the mini to get the gigabit connection? I assumed that the compatible hardware would recognize each other. Am I wrong?

Is there a switch somewhere in the circuit?

I had a similar problem until I realised that the switch I was using to source several machines, was only 10/100mb/s

Just woke up dumb that day...but I'm better now!

I did the same thing a while back and spent a few days troubleshooting only to realize I had picked an old 10/100 cable out of my cable drawer. Replaced it (after I bought a new NIC :Angry-Tongue: that's still sitting in the box unused), and problem solved.

I agree with Bobtomay. Could very well be the cable. How long a run is it from the AE to the Mini?

I don't know if this will be of any use to you, but I noticed in your equipment spec that your Mac Mini used to be a 1.5GHz version before you upgraded the proc.

This version, from late 2005, only had a 10/100 NIC

Could be the cause of the problem....

Grumbles "Well it wasn't in 2005" dammit

Oh well...I'll have to keep thinking then :)

No switches. Just a 10' cable between router and the mini. Mini is gigabit equipped. Do I need a "gigabit" cable?? I thought it is just a standard cat-5??

1000Base-T (Gigabit) should have CAT-5e and not just plain Cat-5. If it's a short run most of the Cat-5 I have here will work, but on a longer run you might just get a 100 connect. Did you build the cable or is it a factory made cable?

Edit: opps, just saw the 10' after I saved the message.

Reason I asked if was a factory made cable is any fault will keep it from connecting at the Gigabit Speed.

I have some poorly made cables 15' or so that refused to allow a Gigabit connect.

The one I was using was a 6' CAT5, and I'd probably had the thing since before there was gigabit.
