I wish Mac had a basic feature that is easily available on PC. Suppose I want to find a particular pictograph symbol that I think might exist in the font Wingdings. In PC, I just go to Accessories>Character Palette, and see every symbol in that font. I can then copy and insert it in my document.

In Mac, you can't do that.

Yeah you can. You just have to find it. For example, in Firefox it is located in Edit -> Special Characters.

And in those applications that don't have that menu entry under the edit menu,
Go to System Preferences>Keyboard and check the "Show Keyboard & Character viewer in in menu bar" box.
