I will be purchasing a new bigger HD for time machine, how would I go about moving the existing time machine drive over to the new one? Is it as easy as moving files?
I have seen several threads about moving Time Machine backups to a new drive. You can find a complicated discussion of this by searching macosxhins.com. The most basic set of directions I have seen thus far are A Bigger Time Machine without Changing History Rolfje’s blog. haven't tested this yet so use at your own risk.
