firewire HD & iPod problems

my old iPod (original 5GB) stopped working with my mac little while ago and to day i got a Lacie fire wire hard drive and that dose not mount either BUT my DV cam and DVD burn still work. ha any body had a problem like this be fore? is it possible to force mount a disk? (if i go into system analyzer it can't see anything on the firewire port)
