Given the typical software, can a person install an application on both your desktop computer and your laptop, or is that not officially legal? Would some kind of registration process utilizing serial numbers prevent that? Or do software companies allow that?

Thank you.

Depends on the software. You need to check the license, they're all different.

Some apps allow you to install on multiple machines provided that they are yours and that you do not use more than one machine at a time (you can't install on a desktop and a notebook and use both at the same time for instance). The best place to find out is the EULA. What piece of software are you referring to?

Check the EULAs for those products. Check to see if they stipulate your right to install copies on other machines (assuming that they are your own of course).

What does EULA mean?

It appears they all allow a desktop and a laptop, as per remarks in this thread.

Thank you!
