1. You need to get your terms corrct. A mini-DVI and a mini displayport are two separate and distinct ports / adapters. They are not interchangeable terms.

2. Kanex does indeed have a version 2 of it's adapter that supports audio via the mini displayport. The one advertised in the ebay link you provided states that it does support audio. Whether the one you purchased from fleabay actually is the V2 or the older V1 that does not support audio... who knows? I would think that mayfly is correct since the one you bought was advertised as used, it is indeed the older V1 and the seller merely did a copy and paste from the current Kanex site. I would suggest you quit buying this sort of stuff from there and use legitimate retail sites.

3. You have not told us which MacBook you have other than to say "new". Sorry, but we have folks calling their 18 month old computer "new" all the time. Without knowing which model yours is, we can't say definitively that your Mac even supports audio thru it's mdp.

I have found at least 4 adapters that support audio now, including one on Amazon that is only $8.

Here are the specs on my MBP.
Apple 13.3" MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, NVIDIA GeForce 320M, SuperDrive, Aluminum unibody, Glossy Widescreen Display (MC374LL/A)

Thanks for your help. Which ones on Amazon do you recommend?

The Moshi that mayfly linked to will work.

Here is the $7 at Amazon. There are two current reviews there reporting that it does indeed carry the audio. The reviewers indicating it does not carry audio have Macs that do not support audio thru the mdp. I'd be trying this one if I was purchasing one for myself, but I'd also be prepared in case it didn't work.

Another thought before you go ahead and buy one though, have you gone into 'System Preferences - Sound' and verified that it is set correctly while you have it connected to a TV? I have read at least a couple of places that it does not auto output audio via HDMI, that you need to go in and change it manually.

You bought the one from Amazon or the Moshi?

You'll need an external mouse to wake it from sleep after you close the lid.
I didn't close mine, I just turned the brightness all the way down.
