Mac book help boot blues

My MBP will not boot past the apple symbol.

(i have read all i can about this issue here and online elsewhere)

None of the startup commands work.

well command - s
and command - v bring me to a black screen with text but there it freezes.

My DVD drive is broken and I wondering how to get my osx disc or disk warrior to hit the system.

I have an external DVD drive but I cannot get my laptop to see it. even when i boot and hold down option.

And how are you backing up ??
