I currently have 4GB of RAM in my MBP. Does anyone know the limit of RAM I can put in it? My guess is the 8GB that you can get on the newer models.

As you suspected...your MBP can be upgraded to 8 gig of ram.

If I remember correctly, the only MBPs that take up to 8GBs are the late 2008 through the most recent 2010 models.
The Mid 2007, Late 2007 (3.1) and early 2008 (4.1) which have the Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn or Santa Rosa processors, all take up to 6GBs.

I think you are dead on there. The only late 2008 model that may not take 8 GB seems to be the 17" If the OWC summary page is correct it is limited to 6GB. Here's a nice overview page of the limits. It shows both factory supported and tested maximums. OWC MaxRAM Memory Certification - Max out your Mac's Memory

@audiofader try running this configuration tool on the OWC site. It will help identify your upgrade options
