My computer is so slow I can't even watch high quality videos without it lagging. I'm considering wiping everything from the hard drive and reinstalling OSX. Any suggestions?

First you have to tell us what you have...before we can suggest what possibly to do to make it faster!

Agreed. It's very hard to help when you are sparse on the details concerning your machine and usage habits.

Adding more RAM will help... if you can, that is.

With the details given...the OP's computer could be almost anything from a 1999 CRT iMac to a 2010 Mac Pro???;)

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
OS X 10.4.11, 1.8GHz Power PC is very broad.
What sort of Mac?
How much RAM do you have?
How much free space on your HD.
Watching high quality movies how?
Any details you can give is going to be helpful.

I dont have any antivirus

Good! ...er, I mean, Darn! Anti-virus software can really slow things down. But, that's not it. It might be RAM, given the assumption that you are using updated software and things that require more RAM now than you were when you first got the Mac.

Its an iMac G5 from 2005
I have 512MB in both slots.
Plenty of free space on the HD, over 50 GB
I can't watch any HD videos, whether its streaming or on my comp

Alright.... sheesh, you like to take your time in between responses lol

You can max out your RAM up to 2GB.
You could also put in a faster HD, but that is only going to speed up read write.

When you say "I can't watch any HD videos, whether its streaming or on my comp" I wonder what it is that u mean by that.
If watching a movie that you have on your Mac, are you using any particular application?
Do you get spinning rainbow ball?
What exactly is it that happens?

Chase it with a bigger knife ! !

Ba dum cschhhh. (Holy cow... I know I said I'd be here all week, but it's 6 months later. Man, I need a better gig. Maybe if my jokes were more funny... )

Lol... my initial thought when I saw the title pop up was.... run faster after it screaming "when I get my hands on you!"

Yeah, I think we all need a better gig...
I might go hit up some of the bars around with guitar and hand and see what's going on, so maybe I can get back to going hard all night and sleeping all day :)

If I had to choose on what to upgrade on my Mac, I would say the RAM. Unless you need more hard drive space, you should get a 72000 RPM Hard drive. That will speed up boot time and app load time.

Good luck!
