Sync 2 machines? Mac Book and G5?

I want to have a static G5 in my office and "sync" files to a Power Book. Is this possible without using MobileMe or something similar? I prefer firewire or similar connection... or maybe even bluetooth? I am new to this whole thing, so please bear with me.
