hi there

i am new to operating with a Mac and am having some trouble deleting files that i originally moved onto my mac from a USB.

the error message that comes up is:

''The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items.''

i have already tried going to the file through the Macintosh HD and trying to delete it that way, but the problem still persists.

any advise would be appreciated

thanks !

Highlight the file's icon then do Get Info (File > Get Info or the button, if you have it "loaded"). Look in the Sharing & Permissions section. Does it give you Read Only permission?

I'm also having the same problem! Thank goodness I found a similar thread. :) And yes, err, it does show read only, and I don't know how to change that?

I want to delete files in my external, and err, rename them. But am unable to. What to do? :(

Change the permissions to read and write.

Erm, I'm looking at the step by step manual, but I'm still unable to change it. It's cause I can't find the lock, although I'm in the admin account. :(

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
At the bottom of the get info window, there is a lock.
Right click (control click) on any file, folder, etc, select get info, and you will see at the bottom on the right hand side of the window, this
Click on that lock, enter your password, and go from there.

Using this as an example, the lock is in the bottom right hand corner.

EDIT: 6string is a quicker typer.

Hehe .... definitely not a quicker typer, unless you've had more beer than I have, and type with less than 4 fingers on your right hand, and 3 on your left! LOL
Nah, I just got in there first ;P

It's 10AM and I'm at work so no, I haven't had any beers ;). This is what happens when I have too many tabs open and I lose track of them I suppose.

This is because that Drive is NTFS and Mac can only read from that drive.
There is third party software to solve this, but I can't recommend any as I don't know enough about it.
Wait for one of the Mac/Windows Gurus to come on board :)

What version of OSX are you running? If it's 10.6.x Snow Leopard, the answer for NTFS is easy.

There is a little application called NTFS Mounter. You run that on each NTFS drive and you enable full Read and Write.

Oh man, I'm so sorry for asking so many questions, but I've downloaded that program, and I've done everything said on the how-to section, and clicked the darn cat and everything, and still, I'm unsure how to proceed next. I still can't delete or change anything since it still says I can only read it. :(

I will hook up an NTFS external to my Intel Mac and run the app and get back to you. In the mean time, try searching for NTFS Mounter here on the forums. I am sure someone else had your issue at one time. I will get back as soon as I can.
