How do you just use a microphone and record on Garage band? Everytime I hit record it doesnt record anything. And it makes it look like its trying to record a piano.

In GarageBand's preferences, go to Audio/MIDI and select the right Audio input.
To use an external microphone, you need an external audio interface, like Griffin's iMic, which gives you a line-in and mic-in port. A microphone will work only on the mic-in.

well since u are using a ibook there is actauly a built in mic... so do as followed above but instead check to use the computer mic.
and then u must create a enw track,, not a software track a real instrumetn track and record it there.

iBook G3 - You'll be missed.
i would recommend if your using an ibook , i would get some kind of imput device like the iMic , because the mic on the ibook will generate noise , such as background noise and stuff .

do you mean the metronome? If so, don't stop it, plug in some headphones and listen to it to ensure you stay in time.
