Hi everyone, I hope all of you are having a great day. When I restore a disk image in Snow Leopard it takes over 50gb of install space! I know that os x should take about 9gb. What is happening?
Thanks in advance.

??? What are you trying to do ?? Reinstall OSX ??

If so when you do a re-install once it is all complete there is a folder usually in Documents that is a "Previous OS" or worded there abouts that is a copy of your OLD OS. Look for this and delete it then empty trash, and you should have your 50GB back :)

Cheers

TMac, Thanks for the reply. I am trying to install a clean copy of OS X. I looked in the documents folder but could not find the folder that you mentioned. Even if the folder was there, I don't think it would be 50gb in size.
More ideas please....thanks.

Hmmm will keep thinking, but that folder will only be there ONCE the re-install has been done. It will also be the same size as what your previous system was ... example if i had 40GB left on my 120HD when i do a reinstall the size of my "previous" folder will be 80GB ....

Remember anything in trash will need to be emptied for you to recover more space back :)

cheers

Where did you get the Snow Leopard disk image from?

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
So, the best bet would be to boot from your install disc (holding C as you boot) and perform a clean install (erasing your HD) using disk utility.
To get to disk utility after booting, select the language, click continue, and go to utilities in the menu bar.
Once you erase the HD, you will see the size of the HD and the free space before you quit disk utility and continue the installation.
*Be sure to format as Mac Os Extended (journaled).

6string, thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested but still ended up with a 50gb OS X install.

This makes no sense.
Before you reinstalled, what size did your HD show after you erased? ....and when clicking on the Macintosh HD partition under the HD, how much available space.
ie. On a 320GB HD, it should look something like this:
Capacity : 319.73 GB (319,728,959,488 Bytes)
Available : 319.73 GB (319,728,959,488 Bytes)

Hmm.... starting to wonder if there is a bootcamp partition, and if it's Leopard and not Snow Leopard, and if it's possible for the poster to give a screen shot of the disk utility window.

Sometimes tricky when not sitting in front of the Mac that we are trying to help someone with ;/

Hi 6string, I am using Snow Leopard.
Would a bootcamp partition show up in disk utility?

Yes, very definitely. And so would unpartitioned space.

Regards.
