I'm trying to understand exactly what an IP represents.
For example:

Will my IP change:
If I get a new computer?
If i change servers?
If I move to another city?

Also what do the 4 segments in my IP represent?

Thanks

The wikipedia article schweb linked to will give you ALL the nitty gritty on IP addresses, but at its most basic, an IP address is a unique way of identifying a particular computer on the Internet. Without this unique identifying information, it would be hard for anything to happen.

There are multiple classes of IP address, some private and some public..

Your IP address isn't necessary linked to your computer per say..but rather is assigned (usually) to you by your ISP to either a single computer or a router from which you could have multiple IP addresses..

What's important is that the IP address should be unique on the Internet and there are numerous facilities out there to ensure that is indeed the case..

Nitpicky patrol here -- the phrase is "per se" not "per say." Latin and all that.

Carry on ... :)
