iPad Maybe ?

Hi Guys

I want an iPad because I enjoy reading books, and I only get time to do so before going to sleep. That's the reason I want an iPad.

But since I have not had one before ... I don't know whether it will be good for reading books !

The other thing that I want it for is to watch 1080p or 720p Documentaries that I download form the internet. Will the iPad be able to play them with no problems ?

I would greatly appreciate some help.

My wife enjoys hers for reading at night without the lights on (which keep me awake). She also watches HD video from iTunes and other sources and really enjoys it. There are several (free) readers available from Barnes & Noble, Kindle and Apple. I believe my wife uses the Kindle version usually, but I'm not 100% on that.

iTunes does not really have the HD Documentaries that I am after.

My question is .. will I be able to upload the Documentaries from my iMac to the iPad and watch them on there ?

As long as the file is in a format supported by the iPad:

The documentaries are in the { .mkv } file format.

I don't see that in the Technical Specifications. So that means I can't play { .mkv } files on the iPad

That would be correct if it's not listed. You could always convert that format to one that's able to be played on the iPad.

Evom - Convert and Download Videos to iTunes works great for that.

I have asked at the Evom forums to see if their program is able to convert from MKV (1080p or 720p) to a HD format on the iPad.

Also ... How good it the iPad as an organiser ? For appointments, dead lines and to do lists ..etc

And will it send email reminders a day before appointments ..etc ?

How good it is depends on how good the ToDo app is you get from the App store to organize all that for you.

I'd recommend spending some time looking at the ToDo apps for the iPad and see if one there will meet all your needs.

Personally I really like Things and use it on my Mac, iPad, and iPhone.

Say you have an appointment for next week on Thursday 2 pm.

You have taken a note of it in the Things app. How does thing make life easier ?

Will it email me ? will it sound an alarm hours before the appointment ?

Do I have to connect my iPad the my iMac ?

Well if you're just scheduling appointments, Calendar will do all that for you and it does have various alarm options.

To do's are different and To Do applications vary in style, functionality, etc based on the style of to do you want to follow.

In my case, I tend to align with the Getting Things Done style of to do management in which Things is great. And in that style, generally things with a specific date and time are put on a calendar, not in the To Do list. Things will let you attach due dates to things, but it's not really meant to be an appointment keeper.

I don't know whether I should go for the Wifi 3G version ... or just the Wifi version !

Is the 3G worth it ?

I'm not sure how any of us could answer that question. Only YOU know what your usage needs and budget are.

Wifi = internet connection when you are connected to your own or a public Wifi network.
3G = ubiquitous internet connection pretty much everywhere for a monthly fee.

Ok If I get the 3G and I'm subscribed to a 3G network. Then I have a MobileMe account.

And at work I write down an appointment in my iCal on the iPad .... Will that show up on my iCal on the iMac at home .. without even connecting the iPad to the iMac ?

I'm very excited for you regarding the iPad purchase, but PLEASE reconsider the Apple-branded iPad case. After getting a hands-on experience with it in the Apple Store, I opted not to buy it. It's very flimsy & cheap feeling, not very durable either. Definitely not worth $40 in my opinion.

If after buying the case .. I'm not satisfied with it ... can I not return it ? !

Once you pay for it, you own it. I would think the only way you would be able to return it if it was defective, not because you didn't like it. Personally, I like my Apple case.

This is incorrect. Anything you buy from an Apple store has a 15-day return period. There may be a (small) restocking fee.

The case, btw, is $29 not $40 -- at least in US pricing.

I too thought the case was flimsy when I first saw it, but two iPad owners who got them several weeks ago -- one of whom treats hers ROUGH -- still love them, and they're both still doing the job beautifully. ADMNJ (Apple Don't Make No Junk).
