I have the mentioned sony camcorder and have searched for suggestions on compatibility with iMovie but didn't find a positive answer as yet, wanted to see if anyone had any further suggestions here. iMovie fails to recognize it when connected by firewire. The camera is probably about 8 years old. I was hoping to find a way to import video from it. Anyone have suggestions on anything else I can try to get iMovie to recognize it or import the video?

It would help people here to know:

What Mac you have
What version of OSX you have (tiger, leopard, snow leopard, etc.)
What version of iMovie you have ('06, HD, '08, '09)
Depending on the model of Mac - some have FW800, some FW400, some both - which are you trying to connect the camera to and if it's FW400 what adapter are you using?

Well, you'll need a firewire cord to tranfers the video, because USB cannot do it with camcorder tapes. We have an older Sony DV camcorder, and nI have to use a firewire 400 cable to connect. I have no tried it with iMovie yet, but I have use Adobe Premiere Pro, and it imports it as whatever format you choose, but you do need a lot of available to do so. For example, 30 mins came in at around 20GBs, which i know is rediculous, but I didn't know what I was doing at the time, it was all uncompressed.

Believe it's an early '08 Macbook Pro, running Snow leopard (10.6.4), iMovie '09 v8.0.6, and FW800.

My camcorder's FW cord didn't fit the Mac port so I had to add on an adapter for it to plug in.

I've only used the FW cord to try connecting so it's not the issue of having tried the USB, unfortunately.
