I've been trying to restore my original operating system with friends' DVDs, but, for reasons not worth going into, I've been unsuccessful.

If I create a new user and, logged in as such, delete my administrator account, will it also delete all my files? I don't want ANY traces of data that are recoverable. Is this a safe way to go about erasing if I'm selling my Mac?

No, it's not. The safe way is to use the correct install recovery DVD to boot the machine, erase the hard drive, reinstall OS X.

Regards.

I think the answer to that question is yes. Of course, the new account would have to have administrator privileges as well. Is it advisable? Maybe not. Perhaps someone will explain further...

Deleting your account does not produce to remove all personal files.
You should do a clean install on formated hard drive. Unless of course you want to be sure your file is not available the next user.
