OpenOffice Misbehaviour

I've recently started using OpenOffice, v 3.2.1.

Almost immediately after installation, OO 'hijacked' every PowerPoint file icon on my HD, replacing it with a blank document icon. Simple enough to restore the Open With function to PPnt, but a nuisance.

Has anyone else experienced quirky behaviour from OpenOffice and non-related files on their computers?

When I installed the Windows version a while back it did the same thing but with all my Office files. But I believe the fault was mine as I may have responded yes to the question about it becoming the default application(s). I honestly can't remember if it asks the same question in the Mac version though. Perhaps you overlooked it and may have responded to the question as I did?

Thanks for responding chscag. I've scrutinised every preference in OO, and there's nothing checked there that would impose on anything in MSOffice.

As for default application, I don't think I answered a question about that, but in any case I'd have said 'no', because I was intending to trial OO only.

Interestingly, since I changed the .pps icons back to their standard appearance, they've remained that way. I think the issue is a bug in OO. As it's a constant 'work in progress', that doesn't surprise me.

It's been awhile since I've installed OO but I believe it automatically sets itself as default application for certain files. I don't remember an option to opt out.

After looking through the OOo forums, bug tracker and a good ol' Google search, there seems to be two different camps - those who want OOo to take over file associations and those who want the user to have a choice. The installer for OOo asks whether there should be file associations (AFAIK) but the Mac version of OOo is distributed as an app bundle which doesn't provide you with the option to choose "install-time" options. Therefore, I'm not sure if you can determine how OOo handles file associations.
