macbook hard drive to macbook pro

I have a macbook, i just upgraded to a 500 gig. i am probly going to buy a macbook pro from a friend. would i be able to take the hard drive out of the macbook and put it into the macbook pro?

or use time machine or carbon copy to copy the hard drive.

Yes to both of your questions. MacBook and MacBook Pro both take a 2.5" 9.5 mm height SATA drive. Note however, you will have to reinstall your version of OS X because of the difference in hardware. Best to use both CCC and Time Machine - that's how I did it.
