I just bought a new D-Links 655 router. Our connection now is even worse than with our old D-Links 524 router! I called our ISP, Clearwire, and they said the problem is not with them, but with the router.

We tried connecting two of our computers (HP Pavilion Elite, and Mac Pro 2.93GHz) directly to the Clearwire modem, and got a very solid and fast connection!

Problem is that only one computer can be connected directly to the modem, and we have four computers online.

I called D-Links and got several technicians that spoke very bad English. I had a terrible time trying to communicate with them. One of them wanted to remotely take control over my computer and install software that he guarenteed would fix our problems!

I said no ... Spoke with supervisor and they gave me a number to call, which turned out to be Apple Tech Support, and they are closed.

Is this router simply not compatible with Macintosh computers? Is this router not able to handle four computers?

Strange that my ancient D-Links 524 router works much better with all four of our computers online at the same time ....

Any suggestions? Should I just test float this D-Links 655 router, and buy another router ... ???

How do you want to connect your systems to the router?

Look at page 5 of the DIR-655 manual. You should see a picture of the back of the router. Connect your clearwire modem to the internet port of the dlink 655. If you are using a wired network, then plug your systems in to one of the four lan port. Then you should be able to get on-line.

Many here own the Dlink DIR655 and love it. Some have rather large networks and never have had one issue.

Can you give us more info? How are you connecting the router to the modem? The computers to the router?

rman should have your answer above.

Have my DIR-655 providing DHCP for 14 devices currently, including 2 Macs, 2 iPhones, iPad, Time Capsule, PS3, Win7 box, Win XP box, Linux box, B-R player, HD-DVD player, and 2 Dishnetwork receivers.

Same here. I've got my DIR-655 as the backbone of my network, which includes about 3 wired devices and 4 wireless. I even stream movies from my D-Link NAS to my Mac and WDTV through the thing and it's been flawless. 24/7, 365, this thing is online and works like a champ. I've never had a better wireless router.

CWA and Bob, I think it's about time I purchase an DIR-655 and ditch the old Linksys WRT54GL. I am always recommending it so I better put my $$$ where my mouth is! It sounds like my kind of router.

The WRT54GL was a good little router too. If you don't have range or transfer rate issues, I wouldn't sweat it.

It's been a great router and never a reset. I just feel I should get something new with Wireless N. If I wait too long the 655 might be discontinued, so I might just grab one that is on sale. Also I want a router with Gigabit RJ45 ports also which the GL does not have.

I posted a thread a not too long ago (last week) about the DIR-655 on sale at Newegg for $65.00 + free shipping.

I think Kash bought a second one...unfortunately I messed around too long, and the deal expired before I was ready to order.

They are normally selling for $79.99 (price in cart).

Make that 15, I forgot one - also have my HP MediaSmart (currently sitting at 4.5 TB) running Windows Home Server connected to it.

Now you know why I've been looking for a switch (sort of off and on, but haven't gotten serious). Currently have 3 devices I'd like to hard wire in the Bdrm.

Pigoo, By the time I saw your thread the price was showing at $83 for me. I just got one for $73. It's on it's way to me. Should be interesting. :D

To the OP, unless you got a defective router which can happen with any product, something is wrong somewhere. Do let us know how you have it all set up.

We have all of the cables and devices connected correctly. That is not the problem.

We have the Clearwire phone box connected to the modem via the Internet port. The other phone box port (Ethernet) is connected to the D-Links 655 router.

Our four computers are connected directly to the router.

Clearwire tech support is telling me they think the problem is because our phone box is too close to the router. So, I will work on setting up the phone box so it's at least three feet away from the router, and see if that helps ....

Do let us know if that works. If not we will try and help more. I have a DIR-655 on it's way to me as I type this as I love the router and felt it was about time I bought one. I need the N and Gigabit ports.

I moved the Clearwire phone box as far away as possible from the router. Have the box hanging only a couple inches from the ceiling, and about four feet from the router.

Clearwire tech support told me they think our problem was from some kind of electromagnetic interference between the phone box and router, and possibly the modem too.

I separated the modem and router, so now they are about three feet apart. Phone box is almost four feet from the modem.

Our connection seems to be better now, and more stable. Lower ping (on my MacPro, between 50-80). Our roommate's ping was around 80.

My download speed (Speedtest) ranges from around 2mbps to slightly over 3mbps. I'm still having trouble with YouTube videos though (lagging).

We are looking forward to when Clearwire upgrades our area to 6mbps! Hopefully that will help ....

If you are plugged directly into the Clearwire modem, what are you speeds like? It sounds like you have 3Mbps internet.

We have the fastest Internet speed that Clearwire offers in our area, which is 2mbps. When my MacPro is connected directly to the modem, I was getting download speeds between 2mbps and 3mbps.

I went through 2 Dlink 614+ routers (oringally bought because they "claimed" they were the best for Xbox Live with the lowest lantency) however when using them with a MAC ( no idea why) they just didnt want to play right. It was an older "b" band router, no issues there i was only on 1.5meg DSL at the time. I have a discontinued Linksys "G" band router that works excellent, never had any issues. And a Netgear "B" band router which i left at the parents so i have wifi there.

Dlink has good tech support, they replaced the router 2x , the last time i just tossed it in the trash and got the linksys.... maybe i had a few runts of the litter, but my expierences wont push me back to a Dlink for a while.
