Quicktime won't open

iMac 27"3.06GHZ INTEL CORE 2 DUO ATI RADEON HD 4850 512MB4GB 1066MHZ DDR3 SDRAM,1TB SERIAL ATA DRIVE
I have new iMac 27 when i click on quicktime logo in applications it jumps into the dock and that is it? i am trying to play Mpeg-4 tutorial video but it says 'could not be opened the movie is not in a format that quicktime understands'
any help would be appreciated.

MacMini 14.3, 8.1 & 4.1, OS 13.5, 10.14, & 10.11 & 10.6; Macbook Pro 8.2, OS 10.12.
Firstly, download VLC Player to deal with your Mpeg4 video.

If Q'time can't play an mpeg4 file, it suggests that the file itself may be corrupted. Using VLC may show that.

Repair permissions, preferably using the correct version of OnyX for your OS, to see if access to Q'time is restored.
