Trying to learn C on Mac

I'm interested in learning C and am wondering if there are any good programs for practicing and applying what I learn. I've heard that the Bourne shell uses primarily C, is this a good place to start? The book that I'm using is "The C Programming Language" by Kernighan and Ritchie. Any tips in getting started will be greatly appreciated.

I believe that you can seach for a copy of the gcc compiler. then you should be able to work in C. The bourne shell is not a compiler.
