I'm interested in buying a new iMac but keep hearing rumors of a new release soon. Should I wait it out or just buy it now?

Provide some rumor links.

Rumors about Apple product releases + $.50 cents will get you a bad cup of coffee!;)

There's been a lot of discussion about the release of a new iMac line. Some folks think that the upgrade is coming soon while some others think not. If you need a new iMac right now, purchase it now. If you can wait, then wait.

Keep in mind that Apple has been very busy this year with the new iPad and the iPhone 4.

Regards.

macOS Big Sur V.11.2.3 iMac (Retina 5K, 27", 2019) 3.1GHz 6 Core Intel Core i5, 16 GB DDR4 SSD,
I got tired of waiting myself and am ordering this today. Any opinions or advice about the configuration? I wanted a intel i5 but really have no need for it, the 27" is not for me or my desk either. I currently have a 3 year old 20" iMac, 2.1 Ghz, 250 Gig HD, that is great and the reason I am getting another one. Giving this one to my friend.

21.5 inch iMac $1899.00 P/N (ZOJC)
Configuration
• 3.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
• 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x2GB
• 1TB Serial ATA Drive
• ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB
• Apple Wireless Keyboard (English) and User's Guide
• 8x double-layer SuperDrive
• Apple Magic Mouse
• None
• Country Kit

Can't go wrong with high end wofldales. They're still top-of-the-line cpus, and clarkdales provide little improvement over them.

There's really no point in trying to get the next revision of iMacs, the upgrades won't be that major-- unless Apple does something way out of the ordinary. Look to next spring-summer for a major iMac upgrade-- sandybridge.

The old rule is...buy as much computer as you can afford...and don't buy just for your needs today...but for tomorrow as well. Unless you're the sort of person who always gets a new computer every couple years.

But that 3.33ghz 21.5" iMac with the decent graphics card you're considering looks like a nice upgrade from your current iMac as well!:) Plus if a 27" iMac is not for you...you can't get the i5 otherwise.

Although...I'm almost willing to bet with the next iMac update...the smaller display iMacs will get an i5 option. But then isn't that what this thread is all about...when is the next update (who knows).:Confused:

I was just about to post this very same topic, according to the buyers guide the imac release is overdue but it can be very accurate as it is only based on the mean number of days between each new release. I do think there will be a minor update in between now and the end of october, i am currently wanting to buy one when i come over to the USA in August as its just that little bit cheaper but id rather wait a month or two and pay that extra money for the updated version.
As i was saying for the 21.5'' imac at £969/$1199 i think the only real improvement would be the graphics card and or the processor slightly.
I would also like to see apple bring this "Starter" imac down in price back to the £799 mark they had a few years back, i could see them maybe doing this just to basically break into the market more.

You could get it with just the 4GB RAM standard and get a 4GB upgrade kit from Crucial or OWC and save a little money. It's cheaper to the RAM upgrade yourself than have Apple do it.

Just an example:
4GB kit (2GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-8500 upgrades for Apple iMac 3.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (21.5-inch - DDR3) Late 2009 Desktop/PC, CT1115236 from Crucial.com

The last release of a iMac was back in Oct 2009 so i dare say there will be a new release in the coming months. Have a look at this from Mac-Rumours

Not to mention that Apple had made it easier for consumers to upgrade the RAM sticks on the iMac (the access panel is at the bottom, am I wrong?)

And now with the Mac mini (about enough computer for me anyways) you can access it on the bottom as well (but my old one you have to slice it open).

Just as others have said- buy as much (computer) as you can afford.

My Mac mini has plenty of improvements for me: the RAM can go up to 8GB (as can a new iMac), and the harddrive can be swapped out (albeit carefully altogether).

Buy as much computer as you can afford. ;D

I appreciate all your advice and support with my decision. Chef_eam, I have considered that upgrade but would rather give Apple the extra $90.00 because of Murphy's law. I would take the chance on adding memory to this old iMac from 2Gb to 4 but not sure it can be upgraded. I will check with Crutial about it.

iNAP, truer words were never spoken, (Ha). just bite the bullet new will be along shortly after new anyway lol
