While listening to radio through iTunes drop out occurrs whenever I start a download.
Is there something I can do to prevent this?

In iTunes preferences, you can set how large the buffer should be for internet radio. Yours may need to be larger.

The performance is also directly related to how much bandwidth you have. People on slo-pitch aka "lite" cable/DSL aren't going to have much fun listening to 128kbit/sec stations but the 64bit ones should be fine.

In addition to how much overall bandwidth you have, do you have other programs that are running that are using up bandwidth? That certainly will affect it as well.
