Depends on which device you're using the SD card in as to whether or not it can be used for extra storage. (for example: a music player) As for capacity, I've see them up to 8 GB but there may be larger ones available.

Regards.

I do not have that connection kit, but this is a direct quote from the Product Overview on Apple's Site:
"Use the SD Card Reader to import photos directly from your camera's SD card. Connect it to your iPad, then insert your digital camera's SD card into the slot.
After you make the connection, your iPad automatically opens the Photos app, which lets you choose which pictures to import, then organizes the selected photos into albums. When you sync iPad to your PC or Mac, the photos on your iPad are added to your computer's photo library."

Based on that, it sounds like the iPad will only recognize image files (jpeg, RAW, etc.). But I guess someone would have to try it out to know for sure.

Is your iPad jailbroken? If it is, you certainly can use it as external storage and hold movies, music, photos or whatever you like there. The native applications will not recognize the files necessarily, but there are several programs that will.

I have heard of this 'jailbroken ' what does it mean, is it legitimate or would it invalidate warranty, if not how do you do it and is there a risk involved, seems a shame if you cannot add extra storage.

It would invalidate your warranty.
