hping packet response on mac OSX

Hi all,

I am a student and own a macbook. A part of my work includes generating icmp packets using hping3 and monitoring the response and the timestamps generated by target systems. But, I am unable to do so for any mac systems as they do not respond to hping icmp packet requests.

I understand that their is a seperate hping3 for mac systems. But that would be for a mac OSX as the sender machine and not the target machine.

Can anybody please guide me regarding how to elicit response and timestamps from apple OS using hping3 icmp packets or for that matter any packet crafted by hping3 (TCP/UDP/ICMP).

The only time a Mac would not respond to a ICMP packet is if you have turned stealth mode on in the firewall settings.

Go to System Preferences > Security > Firewall > Advanced and check whether the stealth mode box is checked.

Checking it will ignore incoming ICMP packets.

I have already taken care of it. Otherwise my macbook wont even be visible to any outside computer. Right?

Not necessarily: just because a computer doesn't respond to ICMP packets doesn't mean it might not respond to other types of packets.
E.g. If I have the checkbox on but allow file sharing, my macbook will still respond to an AFP packet that it receives.

Does your Mac respond to a regular "ping" command sent via the command line?

yes it does.

but it does not generate any timestamp reply in response to the icmp timestamp request packets that it receives.

Also, I tried to find a solution to enable response to icmp timestamp request packets or all icmp packet types in general. But am unable to find it for mac OS X. I am talking about intel core 10.5.8 mac OS X.
