is divx safe for my macbook

i was wondering if i should download divx to play some of my video files and is divx safe?

Sure the program itself is safe, however the files you are opening may not be, which is true regarding any media player. I personally use VLC as it plays audio/video for almost all formats out there.

Any other opinions?

As mentioned there is no need to download Divx. Video players such as VideoLAN (VLC) can play most video codecs like Divx. In other words there is no need to install Divx separately. Even on Windows there really isn't a need to actually install Divx by itself anymore.

You may want DivX if you need the DivX web player. VLC doesn't not provide a web plugin.

I'll chime in another vote for VLC, since it will run on any OS, so it's safe to get used to.

I actually find the Mac version of VLC quite a bit smoother than the Linux version.
