What is the CAS Latency (CL) of the ram in MacBook Pro 15- and 17-inch 2010 models?
I have done a lot of searching and i can't find any information about this anywhere.

Thanks!

Are you just curious...or are you trying to figure out the kind of ram you need to upgrade your computer?

If your doing a ram upgrade...don't worry about the details...and just go to either:

Crucial.com

OWC

...just identify your computer model, and you will get the correct ram you need.

Doubt very seriously you're going to find that info anywhere and doubt very seriously that every single one of them has the exact same RAM in them either.

I am trying to figure out if the ram that would ship with the macbook if i ordered 8gb (2x4gb) would be better than the ram i could buy from a secondary vendor.

The 8gb ram sets from apple is way more expensive than from a secondary vendor but if i buy them from apple as an upgrade while i buy the rest of my macbook the price will be about the same.

Are apples ram more expensive because they are better? (shorter CL? better compatibility?) or can i buy from the secondary vendor without losing power in any way?

Yes Apple charges more for ram...no it's not better. Purchase from one of the links provided above.

My own guess - the OWC and the Newer Tech chips come from the same manufacturer and Newer Tech buys more so they can sell them for less. Neither one of them manufacture RAM.

Would personally feel more confident of putting the Crucial sets in my computers. However, it's the same CAS 7 spec and they're all offering a Lifetime warranty. The $50 extra for the OWC might be worth it - don't know, as I don't know how hard it would be to deal with Newer Tech for replacements. While there may be some difference between the Crucial and the other two sets running some hardware diagnostics, the vast majority of end users would never be able to tell the difference between them.

I also have nothing concrete to tell anyone why $420 would be better than the $230 set except my own preference for certain manufacturers of RAM. At a 90% premium, doubt very seriously I would spend that myself for putting it into a MB or MBP. At a 15-20% premium, I'd get the Crucial - no question. At least you would know you're getting first tier sticks, not the ones the manufacturer declined to put their own name on.

Double and triple money for a set I want to put into a rig I'm planning on overclocking, yeah, I've been known to do that.

Cheers Bob....
The 15-20%, I'd have looked that way, but it's that 90% premium that had me stumped, and got me asking the question. :)
