G4 Firmware update - Arggh!

I have a g4 mac with osx 10 on it. I have to update my firmware but have no osx 9 installation on the osx partition.(it requires this to boot into).

my question is 2 fold.

If i install the osx 9 installation from the system disks, on the same partition as the osx installation, will it break the osx installation or will it run in paralell giving me boot options?

or,

if it will break the partition, is there a better way to achieve/install the os9 installation, or update my firmware without the os9 installation?

No, OS9 and OSX can live with each other quite happily on the same partition

to boot into the right OS, choose the start-up disk preferences or just hold down the alt (or option) key on start-up

What makes you think you need to update the firmware? You are already running OS X in some form so the firmware is okay. You will only be able to install OS 9 if it is earlier than a FW800 MDD, always helps to provide the model and operating system, and when the drive was formatted, did you select to install OS 9 drivers at that time?

If not and OS 9 will install, nack up and wipe the drive and start again.
