I am trying to remove a progrom from my mac, but cant figure it out.

If the application came with an installer, then use the installer to un-install the application, otherwise simply drag the <application>.app file to the trash.
Please verify before emptying the trash afterwards

Are the .app files of all the programs the files located in the Application folder?

Yes. Might want to try Appcleaner to get rid of all of the program/application. Just dragging it to the trash can leave some of the stuff behind that are hidden.

They're wherever you put them. The Applications folder is just for convenience.

Although MacWorld says that the various uninstaller programs aren't perfect. It's better than guessing on your own though.
