I recently (yesterday) got FCE and have been learning how to use it. I'm so excited because I'm finally getting the hang of it. Anyhow, I have a few questions about the effects options. I was watching two videos on youtube using FCE and saw that the videos used effects that I couldn't find. Here's the link to one video: YouTube - chuck&blair; all the same [PREVIEW]

At second :31 there are two different scenes in the single screen.

At second :48 they begin to use a white flash thing.

Are these effects available on FCE 4 HD? If they are, how can you use them? If not, why aren't they available?

Hi! Honestly, many of the edits they did are very easy once you think through what was there and learn more about FCE.

For example - the flashes of white - that's dissolve to color. Place two clips next to each other and drag in the dissolve to color transition. Double click the transition itself in the sequence so it comes into the preview window and in there set the color to white instead of black and also reduce the length of the transition from 1 second to say 10 frames.

Side by side have 1 clip in the video track, drag the second clip into the space above the video track so another video track is created. Now double click on the video in one of the tracks and in the motion tab crop/resize/move the clip into position, then double click on the other video track and adjust its' motion settings to fit it to the other side of the first video clip.

Neither thing is hard to do once you know where to start.

Thanks! I do have a question about the side by side effect though. I'm still unsure about how to do it. Do you put one clip above the other on the timeline? I tried but when I put the one clip on top of the other, the other one just went away. I'm obviously missing something.

Once you have the two stacked on top of each other, double click on (to make it easier to see) the top one so it shows up in the preview window, and click the motion tab and in there you can set the scale, position, cropping, etc. to position the first video clip. Once it appears to be in about the right position, then double click on the other video clip and adjust it appropriately and then you should have the two side by side :).
