I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the recent iOS 4 update I installed on my iPhone 3GS, but I've noticed a little status icon in the right corner of the screen, next to the battery icon - it's purple and looks almost like a little paper plane. It pops up now and then, but it's never been there long enough for me to try to take a screenshot of it, when I've noticed it.

It's not in the manual that I downloaded from Apple's site. Has anyone any idea what it is?

the other new one is Orientation Lock... (3G -not on 3G)

It means that a running app is tracking your location. Camera uses it, maps. It's just letting you know when your phone is aware of your location :)
