Safari :) I used Chrome on my Windows laptop but when I first bought my iMac I thought I'd give Safari a go. I love it :) I have Firefox installed as well but just as a back up :)

No, you'll find a couple *nix nerds (myself included) hanging around here. If only it came preinstalled with OS X...

You can get it with one of the package managers (MacPorts or HomeBrew). As for whether you should try it, well, it's text based browsing so I'll leave that up to you:

Youtube videos...

Has anyone else noticed a large slow down in streaming of youtube videos through any other browser except Chrome??
I have... For a couple of months now, I've noticed that every time I start watching a youtube video, my Safari browser slows down. And its not just on Macs... On my brother's PC, he uses Firefox and he too had the same problem. But using Chrome, it works so well... I installed Chrome on my mac and now the videos seem to be streaming a whole lot better..

I noticed this when Google changed the youtube look. Have they done something to youtube to make it work well only on their own browser???

Are you using YouTube's Flash player or their HTML5 solution? This makes a world of difference for some.

Unless you're using an older version of OS X, Flash is no longer updated through Software Update. As such, you need to update it manually. If you have an older version of Flash, it might be worth upgrading. Take a look here - that will tell you what version you have installed and what the current version is (as of right now, it's 11.3.300.257).

You will know if you're using the HTML5 player because you would have consciously opted into the HTML5 beta. So, if you have no idea what I'm talking about, you're using the Flash player. ;)

Just downloaded an Opera update and have lost my address bar. Even when I customise it it is selected but doesn't show. Unselecting and reselecting makes no difference. Anyone else experienced this?

No, never had that problem with Opera.

It's possible that the toolbar is "off." Go to Tools > Appearance... > Toolbars > check "Show hidden toolbars while customizing" > select the address bar > make sure the placement value is set to anything but off.

Still not appearing. When I click address bar it seems to be controlling the plug-ins bar at the bottom...

Opera doesn't have a "plugin bar." What's on this toolbar?

Opt out of the HTML5 beta here and try again.

The HTML5 performance is going to differ from browser to browser (which might explain why your Chrome performance was substantially better) but the Flash version will perform relatively consistently across browsers.

Safari here, I was an all in FF-user before on windows though

Anyway, I thought i join the offtopicers just slightly and say this.. in safari..download ClockToFlash extension and in settings "media player" choose Quicktime player and all your (most of) videos will now be played in qt-player which helps ALOT.. my fan never goes off like with built-in players.

I think I finally figured out why Chrome was working better on streaming youtube videos...

Take a look at the screenshot of the activity monitor. At the time the pic was taken I was running the same video on both browsers...
You can see that Chrome has 3 - 4 rendering threads on and a shockwave player working, while Safari has neither.

On another note.. Is there a shockwave player for Safari??? I haven't seen or heard of any.
