I understand I can download a program on the Apple website to open .sit files with, but I have no idea what to look for and I don't want to randomly download some opener which has viruses. Can anyone help me with this?

I believe that is a Stuffit (smith micro) file type. Search for Stuffit Expander.

Either Stuffit, or better still, The Unarchiver.

And there aren't any viruses for the Mac. Just FYI.

But there is malicious software out there that targets and affects Mac computers. So the OP is right to be cautious.

No there isn't.

There is the DNS changer Trojan but it's NOT a Virus (Does not self install nor spread itself around the net. There are no actual VIRUS's as yet though for OSX. That is what Chas was talking about.

That DNS one is hard to get. Mostly with porn video codecs and pirated apple software. I had to search to find it. Installed it on an old G4. Tried it and removed it in 20 seconds with the terminal! :D

Ok, ok there is. But from a very suspect source then.
