Hi folks
I recently bought a powerbook
My big issue is that i hate windows
And i dont want to wait for Longhorn
And im looking for an OS that can replace my personell needs
And my companies needs
I need alot of software to work on it that isnt compatible
But i am open to alternatives

hmm... Adobe are also on mac(adn they just bought Macromedia)... and for M$.. some of them can be replaced by iWork,,, the rest i dont know...

For page layout, consider InDesign, which is far better than PageMaker. Or even RagTime which is quite competent (and there are OS X, OS 9, and Windows versions).

And for MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, the Mac versions are very competent; however, especially in Excel VBA is crippled on the Mac side, because it is based on VB 5, and PivotTables are not as complete, no PivotCharts, and no ActiveX support (for Control toolbox items). But for 98% of what people use these programs for, you won't find any problems. And you might like the interface much better.

I agree.

Is it wrong to argue that you should stay on Windows? Eyeballing it that is about 9K worth of software. And chances are with a load out like that you have a fairly good box to boot. I like OS X and all that but you seem to have a rig pretty tweaked for your needs. Why switch platforms and go through an extreme investment in software, hardware, and configuration not to mention adjusting your workflow all at the same time?

Keep your PC and move peices of your workflow over to the PowerBook rather than going cold turkey. This way you can taste the waters and see how they are rather than pounding your head against 30 learning curves at once.

those are great ideas thanx
as for the complete switch
i have most of these pieces of software
but not all of it
im going to get the software for my business
the money isnt a big issue for me
the ones that are alternatives are they compatible with the more popular format
and
what do you think about virtual PC
i notices nobody mentioned that
im looking to replace all of my companies computers with macs when leopard comes out
i want to ride out the current hardware as much as possible
for now i want to try out a few laptops and desktops on my own
on a long term basis to see how it will work
i visit the apple store every now and then
but living with an apple is quite differnt
im wondering wat would you suggest laptop, desktop, and server wise for my needs
i wont be using all of this software, its mostly for my employees
but the office, some adobe and macromedia and the accounting software will be used intensly
i want to have those other apps on my computer either way
just in case i need to veiw something
but productivity is my main usage

I should note that that list may contain errors. Much of it is from memory, which is why I was able to come up with it so quickly.

As for VPC...I wouldn't count on it for daily use. It's like having all the disadvantages of Windows piled on those of a Mac, only at really painful speeds. Maybe for one or two apps, once or twice a week, but not for daily production use.

that way they will help you when you tell them what s/w your running in winblows
